I for one, don't own a TV, to hook up to my computer, so I wouldn't really have the screen estate on my monitor to do such a thing. It's not a console game, nor is it a partygame, so I don't think that it'd be necessary.

I'm not really a solitary gamer who demands every inch of my screen real estate be mine in full HD glory or scoff at the idea that there is a large camp(yes smaller than the single player display camp) of players out there that enjoy their display experience differently. I'm willing and would love to share my large screen with friends and family so that I can play with them and collectively enjoy the game in a couch coop setting. Where as single player display only options make me pause and evaluate all the merits of the game from a single player perspective before choosing to buy it. When I encounter a game I know I can play with my family at the same time with screen sharing features, I don't even have to think about it, I buy it. I personally love most the game titles that do provide advanced coop modes such as shared screen and split screen.

I'm not sure where people live in the world so maybe it is different elsewhere, but I'm in the US and what we call a monitor vs a TV is technologically becoming very blurred to the point that at times there is no difference. The absents of split screen is not a deal breaker for me, nor would I consider it a "gotta have" at beta feature, however split screen functionality for Starbound at some point at or after full release would make an already stellar StarBound that much more amazing.
