Red helmets on the map show the current locations of mercenaries who are on your trail. They’ll also hunt you down relentlessly, even going so far as to board a ship and chase you across the Aegean. They know roughly where you are, and they hone in on your location.
Mercenaries who have taken a contract to put you down are not like normal enemies who look for you. There’s a red bounty meter in the lower-right corner of the HUD that shows your current bounty status. If the bounty gets high enough, a mercenary will take the contract and come after you.
The more egregious your crime, the larger the bounty. Someone will place a bounty on your head if you’re seen trespassing in restricted areas, stealing, killing innocents or combatants who are leaving you alone, or sinking non-aggressive ships. I don't know why some mercenaries scale up and others don't. I've also seen mercenaries that scaled up to my level like all the other enemies in the game. I've run into mercenaries with a higher rank in my tier that were lower level than my character. No matter what their rank or tier relative to yours, mercenaries have a fixed level and are likely to be untouchable if they are more than two levels above you. Mercenary rank/tier and character level are different things. The system is dynamic and defeated mercenaries are replaced. Kill or recruit a higher-ranked mercenary and you move up in the rankings, lose and you move down. You move up through the ranks by defeating mercenaries that are ranked higher than you. You start at the bottom of the heap in Tier 9. There are usually four or five mercenaries of increasing rank in each tier from 2 through 9. The greatest mercenary in all the land stands alone in Tier 1. There are nine tiers of mercenaries in Odyssey. How does your character rank in comparison to the others? Kassandra and Alexios talk tough when they’re on Kephallonia, but when you start the game, you’re the lowest ranking mercenary in Greece. Kassandra and Alexios are also mercenaries. Keep in mind that these warriors are your brothers and sisters in arms. The descriptions appear after they've been recruited. You can also see icons but not descriptions of their buffs. Scouting with Icarus shows you a mercenary's strengths, weaknesses, and loot. Lieutenants can also join you in combat if you have the Call to Arms ability from the Assassin tree. High-level Lieutenants carry powerful buffs for naval warfare and having them on board can be the difference between ruling and running when you sail the Aegean. If you knock a mercenary out, you can both loot their gear and recruit them as a Lieutenant to add to your crew on the Adrestia. They carry some of the best loot in the game, and if you can kill them, the loot is yours. There are good reasons to challenge a mercenary, however.
